Gov't Avails Braille Version Of Key Data Protection And Privacy Law

A version of the important Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019 catering for the needs of blind people has been provided.

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, recently unveiled the braille version of the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019, and its regulations.

This was at the recent launch of the 2023-2028 Strategic Plan for the Personal Data Protection Office in Kampala.

Taybwa emphasized the utmost importance of updating the existing data protection laws to align with the rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies.

“As we embark on our digital transformation journey, it is crucial that we take practical steps to enhance our data security. Data protection has become an essential aspect of our day-to-day operations.

It is a game changer for both governments and businesses, enabling us to cultivate consumer trust and mitigate the risks of identity theft, fraud, and other malicious activities,” the Deputy Speaker noted.

Minister of Information, Communications Technology and National Guidance, Chris Baryomunsi, noted that the introduction of the braille version of the Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019, as well as the accompanying Data Protection and Privacy Regulations, 2021 will ensure that individuals with visual impairments have equal access to crucial information regarding their privacy rights.

"This is a significant step forward in promoting inclusivity and accessibility and it underscores our collective commitment to having a society where no one is left behind. I express my sincere appreciation to the entire team for their dedication to this important initiative", he said.
